Kitchens big enough to cook in – is it too much to ask?

By Prue Leith

From House to Home, a major conference for housebuilders, policymakers and sociologists is on November 20-21. Here, Prue Leith, cookery doyenne, discusses the bad effects poor design has on our lives

You would think the national Home Builders’ Federation would jump at the chance to build better designed social housing instead of the rabbit hutches currently on offer.

Would not it give them a nice glow to know that they’d provided enough space to not only store the ironing board, but also unfold and use it, somewhere to stash the kids' toys, and a kitchen big enough to sit down and eat in?
